It began with Daphy.

She was our girl — our cocker spaniel, our family and an unmistakable presence in our home. Loud in her happiness, close at every doorway, entirely part of the shape of our days.

After we received Daphy’s ashes, we confronted a deeply human problem. The remains of a companion who had occupied such an enormous place in our lives had been returned to us in a small container, with no meaningful answer about what should happen next.

Putting her away in a cupboard felt wrong. We did not want her memory reduced to something hidden and static.

HaloVase began with the belief that remembrance could take a different form: light moving through water, willow roots reaching, bubbles rising, and a living thing continuing to grow in the home.
